An important contingent of Antarctica’s controversial
Mineral Party has taken control of the Regional Assembly
in Palmer Land. While a minority, even in an area renowned
for its mines and freshwater exports, they command the
zealous core of the activist labor movement. Their call
for local tariffs, increased taxes, and the affiliated
unionization of sentient property, has stirred old tensions
with the mercantile middle class and the South Land’s
powerful business patrons. Modest rioting in Dyer, Vang,
and Eights Station begs the question: can Palmer Land
continue to resist the Antarctic Charter’s General
Law? |
